Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
